Spending less money / knowing what I’m about

So you all know that Hannah and I are terrible at money, but I’m trying to be better at not throwing all my money away. This week I decided that spending $75 a month on cable TV isn’t worth it so I got researching on a way to still watch all the Hallmark movies I can’t live without, but also not burn my paycheck doing it. I’m doing a trial of Sling and that combined with the Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime memberships that I have/have access to, I should be looking at some nice savings. I’ll do a whole post about what I’m cobbling together later if it works. But, life is all about balance, so I also signed up for a month of Rent the Runway Unlimited. *cries into a pile of debt* I talked about Rent the Runway here and listed out some of my favorite black dresses for the gala I have next weekend. One of the dresses I was most interested in would be $75 to rent and there was a promotion for the Unlimited membership for $99. I know I should shop my closet and find something I already own to wear, but I know what I’m about and I know that three days before the gala I’ll panic about hating everything I own and go buy something new to wear. So this way, I get to rent unlimited things for about what I’d spend on a new outfit anyways. Plus, I have another event later this month, so I’ll be able to rent something new for that, too! If you also know you’ll just panic and impulse buy something, you can save $30 on a rental from Rent the Runway here. Cheers to being honest with ourselves.

Ice Cream Museum

ice cream museum san francisco

Yesterday I had the chance to fly up to San Francisco for the day to check out the Ice Cream Museum. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s an immersive museum that is solely about ice cream. You may remember when I did the same for the Color Factory last September. Somehow my job lets me do this and I’m not questioning it.

My favorite part, the neon “sprinkles” above the sprinkle pool

The museum itself was really cute but having seen the Color Factory, I wasn’t sold. Their experience was overall more sophisticated and well done. Unfortunately for us, they are both a limited run and will be closing at the end of February. I love that we’re pushing the boundaries of what a museum is and can be. Why does it have to be a stuffy white-walled gallery in which you can’t touch or play or be immersed in anything? And lately these days I’m for anything that challenges an institution. I say bring it on (plus the 3 scoops of ice cream didn’t hurt either).

Girl Gang Playlist

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was putting together a girl power playlist, and the final collection turned out pretty well. I’m up to about four hours of songs that make me want to gather all of my female friends and form a gang to dismantle the patriarchy and really, what more could you ask for? TBH It’s pretty Beyoncé heavy but what else is new? Put it on shuffle and you’re ready to roll.

Goodbye, Chief Wahoo!

The Cleveland Indians have FINALLY decided to get rid of Chief Wahoo, the racist caricature that they used for a logo. A lot of (middle-aged, white, male) fans are upset with this decision, but I’m pretty excited about it. Growing up with the Indians, I never realized how terrible Chief Wahoo really was (despite seeing protestors outside of the stadium before games in the 90s). As I got older and more aware of the world beyond my personal experiences, I realized how inappropriate it was to have a racist drawing of a Native American as a sports team logo. Unfortunately, this decision was largely driven by the MLB and while the logo will no longer appear on team uniforms or any paraphernalia sold by MLB, the Indians still retain the trademark and will continue to sell items with Chief Wahoo in the stadium. So, yay for baby steps I guess but also try harder Indians. You can read more about the decision in this NYT article.

Attaching a wood fence to a chainlink fence

As I mentioned in my last fence/gate update post, I helped Erika attach a wood fence to the chainlink fence in her backyard. The process was similar to when I converted a chainlink fence to a wood fence, except in this case, we left the chainlink fence intact. This method is a good option if you want to add a little more privacy to your yard or camouflage a chainlink fence while you wait to save up for a completely new fence.

Obsessions: 10.19.18

You wanna know what we have been decidedly NOT obsessed with in the past month? The blog. Womp womp. We’re hopping back in this week, but we’ll be posting a bit more sporadically for a while. Here’s hoping you all loved getting caught up on Michelle’s driveway gate plans yesterday. See what else we’ve been obsessed with in this week’s And Then We Tried Obsessions.

Fence Updates and Two-Panel Wood Driveway Gate Plans

Hellooooo, I’m thinking about fences again! You all had the pleasure of following along as I moved and rebuilt the fence in my backyard and then converted a chainlink fence into a wood fence along my driveway, and now it’s finally time to build that driveway gate. Of course, I can’t just build a driveway gate and leave it at that, I’ve also decided to cap the entire fence to cover up the dogear pickets and give everything a cleaner and more finished look. HOORAY!
